From the Maghreb to the Gulf: a relocation checklist
Diploma attestation, work visas, housing and banking — the steps to plan before you sign.
Before you sign
Read the full offer: basic salary versus allowances (housing, transport), working hours, annual leave, probation (maximum six months under Qatar's Labour Law) and end-of-service gratuity (at least three weeks' basic wage per year of service in Qatar).
Diploma and document attestation
Degrees usually need a chain of attestation: issuing university, Ministry of Higher Education, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the issuing country, the embassy of the destination country, then the destination's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Start early — it can take several weeks. Also prepare police clearance and civil documents.
Visa and residence
Your employer sponsors the work visa. On arrival you complete a medical check and fingerprints, then receive your residence permit (QID in Qatar, Emirates ID in the UAE). Since 2020 Qatar no longer requires an exit permit or employer NOC to change jobs for most workers.
Housing, banking and daily life
Budget for a rental deposit and first months' rent. A bank account generally requires your residence permit and salary certificate. Keep copies of every document and a written employment contract signed by both parties.
